Cards Defeat Belmont and Butler in Saturday Doubleheader

Louisville improves to 7-3 on the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Belmont and Butler Saturday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards started the day defeating the Bruins 6-1 and then went on to sweep the Bulldogs with a score of 7-0.
Louisville (7-3) only dropped five sets on the day with four players earning multiple wins.
"Doubleheaders are so tricky", said UofL head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "The guys showed up today. It got a little unsteady against Belmont as some of those matches went to a third set, but the guys regrouped and got the win. I'm proud of how they came out in the second match, brought the energy, and didn't let Butler get in the match."
The Cardinals will return to action at home next Saturday with a doubleheader against Indiana and IUPUI. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. against the Hoosiers with the second match to follow at 4:30 p.m.
Louisville 6, Belmont 1
The doubles duo of Andre Steinbach and Miguel Avendaño defeated Belmont's Ruben Busch and Alfred Wallin 6-2 at the No. 2 spot to secure the first win of the day. Etienne Donnet and Kosuke Nakanishi clinched the doubles point for the Cards, besting Gabriel Sardo and Niklas von Hellens 6-3 on Court 3.
In the singles matchups, it was Piet Steveker on Court 4 who swept von Hellens 6-4, 6-3 to keep the momentum going for the Cards. Miguel Avendaño followed up with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) sweep over Busch on Court 6 to give Louisville a 3-0 advantage in the match.
No. 34 Donnet came back to secure the victory on Court 1 after dropping the first set, defeating Wallin 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
On Court 2, the Bruins saw their first victory of the day when Tomas Luis took Natan Rodrigues to the wire in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 3-6. Enrique
Peña prevailed in three sets to secure the win over Sardo 2-6, 7-6, and 6-4 on Court 5. Steinbach finished up the match by securing a win over Ian Cruz in three sets as the Cards took five of the six singles points on the day.

For the second time in Saturday's doubleheader, the Cardinals clinched the doubles point to give them an early lead. Natan Rodrigues and Matthew Fung started the scoring, defeating Butler's Nicolas Arts and Alvaro Huete-Vadillo 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. The duo of Avendaño and Steveker won the point by beating Patrick Joss and Rahulnik Konakanchi at the two-spot.
Louisville remained hot throughout singles action as Avendaño defeated Butler's Aidan Williams 6-1, 6-1 at the six-spot to get the scoring started.
Steveker extended the lead to 3-0 and picked up his third win of the day by defeating Konakanchi 6-1, 6-3 on Court 4.
Rodrigues won his seventh match of the season, beating Arts 6-2, 6-2 at the two-spot and clenched the match for UofL.
Nakanishi took care of business at the No. 5 spot, defeating Nicholas Balthazor 6-0, 6-2. Steinbach defeated Joss 6-2, 6-3 on Court 3 to give him three total wins on the day. No. 34 Etienne Donnet ended the match for the Cards on Court 1 by defeating Huete-Vadillo 6-3, 6-1.
