Cards fall 6-3 to host FAU to halt eight-game win streak
The University of Louisville softball team fell 6-3 to host FAU to halt its season-opening eight-game win streak Friday afternoon in the Joan Joyce Classic at the FAU Softball Stadium.
Â
The Cardinals (8-1) will wrap up the weekend on Sunday when they take on Maine at 9 a.m. and Michigan at 11:15 a.m.
Â
In a game that featured three lead changes and two ties, Louisville outhit FAU 11-10 and each team stranded eight runners. Daisy Hess went 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and drove in two runs while Bailee Richardson and Maddi Grant registered two hits each and Riley Frizell connected on a home run to lead the Cards at the plate.
Â
In their second game of the day, the Cardinals wasted no time getting started with a pair of runs in the first inning. Kiley Goff led off with a single and crossed the plate on a double by Hess. With one out in the inning, Frizell powered a shot over the fence in right centerfield for her team-best third home run of the season to put Louisville on top 2-0.
Â
The Owls (5-3) answered in the home half of the inning behind Presley Leebrick's two-run homer to even the score at 2-2.
Â
Louisville capitalized on three hits and an error to go back on top in the second. An FAU miscue allowed Ally Alexander to reach. Chelsea Mack followed with a bunt single and Kiley Goff's fielder's choice loaded the bases for Hess who singled and tallied her second RBI of the game.
Â
FAU countered again in the home half of the second behind Cameryn Orland's RBI triple which tied the game at 3-3. Orland crossed the plate on a wild pitch to put the Owls on top 4-3, marking the first time Louisville has trailed this season.
Â
The Cardinals threatened to score in the fifth when Hess delivered her third hit of the game and proceeded to steal second. Bailee Richardson walked to put two runners on, but a flyout and groundout ended the threat. The Owls also had a scoring opportunity in the fifth when a hit batter, a stolen base and single put runners on the corners with two outs, but Paige Geraghty made a diving catch on a fly ball to left field to keep the score at 4-3.
Â
FAU used three hits including a pair of RBI singles to tack on two more runs, extending their lead to 6-3 in the sixth inning.
Â
Alyssa Zabala (3-1) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits and striking out one in 1.2 innings of work.
Â
Trinity Schlotterbeck got the win, allowing one unearned on six hits and fanning two in 4.2 innings of relief. Leebrick went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to pace FAU offensively.
