Cards Beat FAU 2-1 for Seventh Straight Win

Vanessa Miller connects on a two-run homer, Gabby Holloway and Alyssa Zabala combine on a two-hitter
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Vanessa Miller went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and Gabby Holloway and Alyssa Zabala combined for a two-hitter to lead the University of Louisville softball team to a 2-1 win at FAU Thursday evening in the opening game of the Joan Joyce Classic at the FAU Softball Stadium. With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 7-0 to start the season, their best start since 2012.

The Cardinals jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning courtesy of Vanessa Miller's two-run homer. Riley Frizell got the frame started with a base hit up the middle and was lifted for pinch-runner Pickle Winkler. One out later, Miller launched her second home run over the left field fence.

The Owls (4-3) answered in the home half of the inning when Kamryn Jackson led off with a double, took third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a groundout to make the score 2-1.

After surrendering the run in the second, Holloway (1-0) held the Owls in check and did not allow a runner to move into scoring position for the next four innings, finishing the game with a pair of strikeouts and allowing only two hits in five innings. Zabala retired all six batters she faced and delivered two strikeouts to earn her first save of the season.

Gabby Sacco (1-1) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits and registered one strikeout in four innings.

The Cardinals will continue play in the Joan Joyce Classic on Friday when the take on Seton Hall at 11:30 a.m. and FAU at 4:30 p.m.
