Cards Power Past FIU 11-2 for Sixth Straight Win

Riley Frizell and Kiley Goff drive in three apiece to help Louisville improve to 6-0 on the season
MIAMI, Fla. – The University of Louisville softball team extended its season-opening win streak to six games with an 11-2, five inning win over FIU Tuesday evening at Felsberg Field.

Riley Frizell belted out a three-run homer and Kiley Goff connected on a three-run double to help lead the Cardinals at the plate. Alyssa Zabala (3-0) allowed two earned runs on three hits and struck out five in four innings while Sam Booe delivered a pair of strikeouts in an inning of relief to help the Cardinals improve to 6-0 on the season.

The Cardinals jumped to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first highlighted by Bailee Richardson's RBI double and Frizell's three-run homer. Chelsea Mack reached on an FIU miscue and Daisy Hess followed with a walk to set the table for Richardson who smacked a double to centerfield. Frizell then launched a shot over right centerfield for her second homer of the season to put Louisville on top 4-0.

FIU (2-4) had a chance to score in the home half of the inning when an error and a pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs, but Zabala delivered a strikeout to escape the jam.

The Panthers got two runs back in the third, using a walk and a hit to put runners on for Bailey Grossenbacher's one-out double. Ella Whitney's RBI groundout cut the lead in half. With a runner on third and the tying run at the plate, Zabala dealt a called strikeout to end the frame with Cards leading 4-2.

The fourth inning saw the Cardinals capitalize on three errors, a walk and two hits, including Frizell's three-run double to put up a six-spot and take a 10-2 lead. Vanessa Miller reached on a fielder's choice, Ally Alexander was hit by a pitch and Mack singled to load the bases. Hess walked to bring Miller home and Goff cleared the bases with a double down the left field line. Three FIU miscues saw Goff and Frizell cross the plate to give Louisville a 10-2 lead.

The Cards tacked on their final run in the fifth inning when Ally Alexander beat the throw for an infield single. After earning walks in her first three plate appearances of the game, Hess connected on a double to make the score 11-2.

Brooke McNichols (1-1) took the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on three hits and striking out two in 3.1 innings of work. Four different players registered a hit for the Panthers.

The Cardinals will continue their road stretch on Thursday at 6 p.m. when they take on host FAU in the opening game of the Joan Joyce Classic.
