No. 4 Louisville Sweeps Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Outside hitter Charitie Luper had 12 kills, hit .417 with an ace and seven digs to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-12, 25-16, 25-12 sweep of Notre Dame in ACC volleyball action Saturday afternoon in the Joyce Center.

The Cardinals move to 19-3 and 11-1 in ACC play with their 12th sweep of the year. Notre Dame falls to 9-12 and 2-10 in the league.

Louisville hit .321 as a team with 38 kills, eight aces and six blocks. Hannah Sherman had five kills on seven swings and no errors to hit .714 and added four blocks. Sofia Maldonado Diaz had four kills and two digs and Cara Cresse had five kills and two blocks. Libero Elena Scott had 13 digs and Elle Glock had 16 assists.

The Cardinals extended Notre Dame's  losing streak to eight straight matches. The short-handed Irish were led by Phyona Schrader's six kills and two blocks. Anna Bjork had four kills and a block. The Irish hit .000 for the match with 21 kills, three aces and two blocks. Â

The Cardinals stay on the road this coming weekend when they travel east to face Syracuse on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. and Boston College Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. in Chestnut Hill.

Louisville used a series of runs throughout the first set as it cruised to the 25-12 run. A 4-0 run including  a Hannah Sherman block gave a 4-2 lead to UofL. A kill by Sofia Maldonado Diaz was the final point of a 7-1 run that put the Cards up 11-7 and sparked a Notre Dame timeout. The pause did not shift the momentum as Louisville spread the lead to 16-8 and force the Irish to burn their last timeout. An 8-2 run including another Sherman block put the Cards up 23-12 and two straight hitting errors by Sydney Palazzolo gave UofL the 25-12 win.

In the second set, the Irish turned the tables early, going on a 5-0 run to pull within three at 16-13 before Dani Busboom Kelly called timeout. The reset benefitted the Cards who came out and scored five of the next six points. After Charitie Luper bounced an attack to put the Cardinals up 21-14, the Irish called timeout. Three straight kills by Luper gave UofL set point. The Irish staved off the loss, scoring twice, but a kill by Sherman gave Louisville the 25-16 win and a 2-0 set lead going into the break.

Louisville's quick start in the third set caused  Notre Dame to call an early timeout at 6-1. It was a 6-1 run by the Cardinals, highlighted by aces from Kamden Schrand and Elle Glock, that forced ND to burn its final timeout of the match, down 15-6. The Cardinals got to match point on a block by Alanna Bankston, who then turned around and had the match point as well.
