New Faces Lead Cards at Live in Lou Classic

Layla Roebke and Rylee Penn earned top-15 finishes to lead the women’s team to a fourth-place finish.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville cross country teams kicked off the 2023 campaign on Saturday morning at the 22nd annual Live in Lou Classic at E.P "Tom" Sawyer Park.
The women's squad fought through a packed field to take fourth in the team standings with a total score of 224 points after finishing 33rd at the same meet last season.
Layla Roebke and Rylee Penn led the way with a pair of individual top-15 finishes to go along with personal-best performances over the 5K course. Roebke, a transfer from Tulsa, finished eighth in 17:11.0 while Penn, who transferred from Cincinnati, clocked 17:18.7 to take 12th place.
Lexie Paskiewicz also bested her previous personal-best by nearly a full minute while earning 50th place in 17:57.6.
A pair of freshmen rounded out the scoring five for the Louisville women in their collegiate debuts, as Maddie Seaby crossed the line in 18:06.9 to take 73rd place and Temi Ariyo finished 92nd in 18:17.1.
On the men's side, Jack Stansell donned the Louisville uniform for the first time since joining the program in the spring, running 24:54.5 for a new personal-best in the 8K.
Freshman Innocent Ntwali followed close behind with a time of 25:01.5 in his first meet with the Cards, while Forest MacKenzie came through the line in 25:18.1 as the top returner on the day for the Louisville men.
Nicky Alexander recorded a time of 25:24.7 in his Louisville cross country debut and Ethan Meyer was the fifth man through for the Cardinals in 25:43.8.
Following two weeks off, the Cardinals will return to the course on Oct. 13 at Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, Texas.
