No. 3 Cardinals Sweep Missouri to Win Tiger Invitational

Louisville moves to 6-0 with its fifth sweep
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Cara Cresse had a career-high 12 kills and six blocks to lead the No. 3-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team to a three set sweep of Missouri Sunday afternoon at the Tiger Invitational.

The 25-10, 25-20, 26-24 win pushes Louisville to 6-0 on the season. The Cardinals hit .333 as a team with 46 kills, six aces and nine blocks. Anna DeBeer joined Cresse in double-digit kills with 12 and Charitie Luper had eight kills and nine digs. Setter Elle Glock tallied a match-high 37 assists and libero Elena Scott recorded 13 digs.

Missouri hit .057 with four blocks and two aces. The Tiger offense was paced by Jordan Illif's nine kills and one block.

The Cardinals travel to Dayton on Wednesday to take on the Flyers, who are 5-1 and coming off winning their own Flyer Classic. Louisville then hosts Penn State on Sunday, Sept. 10 at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.

The Cardinals established their offense quickly in the first set, hitting  a toasty .524 with three blocks and a pair of aces. Using runs of 6-0 early to go up 15-6 at the media break and then a 7-1 to cruise to the 25-10 win. Phekran Kong had four kills on five swings and Anna DeBeer connected on three of her four sets to lead the UofL offense.

In the second set, Missouri responded to the Cardinal momentum and took an early lead. Louisville tied at 11 and then took the lead at 13-12. Mizzou tied at 13 but then allowed the Cards to retake the lead at on two straight kills by Cara Cresse ahead of a kill by DeBeer and an ace by Jones to spread the lead to four at 18-14. The Tigers scrambled back and came within one at 21-20 on a kill by Jordan Iliff. Kills by Jones and DeBeer took the Cards to a 23-20 lead and spark a Mizzou timeout. UofL reached set point on a kill by Kong and forced Missouri to use its final timeout at 24-20. A block by Kong gave the 25-20 set win to the Cards and a 2-0 set lead going into the break.

Louisville had a comfortable five point lead at 13-8 midway through the third set but allowed Missouri to tie at 15 on three straight Cardinal errors and then take the lead at 16-15 on a kill by Dilara Gedikoglu. When MU went up two at 17-15, Louisville called its first timeout. Louisville regrouped and tied the match at 19 on a kill by Charitie Luper.  But Coach Dani Busboom Kelly had to burn her final timeout after Maya Sands aced the Cardinals. UofL got a kill from Jones and an ace by libero Elena Scott to force a Tiger timeout. The Cardinals tied at 23 on a block by Cresse and then traded points to tie at 24 on another block by Cresse. A kill by Cresse gave UofL set point at 25-24 and then Louisville won the set and match on a kill by DeBeer.
