Louisville netted four first half goals to secure its first ACC win of the season.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 10th-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team tallied four goals in the first half on its way to a 5-2 victory over NC State on Sunday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville (6-1-1, 1-1-1 ACC) scored four goals in a half for the first time since Sept. 28, 2021 against Western Illinois and the first time against an ACC opponent since Sept. 22, 2017 versus Boston College.
The five goals overall were the most for the Cardinals since a 5-0 victory over Eastern Illinois on Oct. 12, 2021.
As they have done in every match this season, the Cardinals were the first team on the scoreboard on Sunday. A NC State foul gave the Cards a free kick in the attacking end in the 13th minute. Sander Roed played a cross into the box and Josh Jones headed it past the keeper for the opening strike.
The assist was the 17th of Roed's career, moving him into a tie for seventh on Louisville's all-time list.
Damien Barker John found the first of his two goals on the night in the 28th minute, deflecting a clearance from the goalkeeper and then firing into an empty net to make it 2-0.
Following his earlier assist, Roed got in the scoring column in the 36th minute as Ethan Subachan played a pass to his feet and the junior rifled a shot into the back of the net from outside the box for his second of the season.
The first-half scoring continued for the Cardinals less than two minutes later with Barker John notching his second of the night. David Boccuzzo played Barker John in and the sophomore took care of the rest, making it three goals in the last two matches for him.
NC State (5-4-0, 1-2-0) finally broke through in the 53rd minute, but Louisville stretched the margin back to four on an own goal later in the half. The Wolfpack then tacked on a second goal with less than five minutes to play.
Louisville outshot NC State 17-14 in the victory and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Cardinals next match comes Friday night with a road trip to take on Virginia. Kickoff from Charlottesville is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
