Emilia Kaczmarczyk scores a pair of goals to lead the Cardinals to a 4-1 win over JMU
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Emilia Kaczmarczyk scored twice to lead the fourth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 4-1 win over JMU Friday evening at Trager Stadium. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 7-1 on the season.
Â
In the game, Louisville outshot JMU 10-5 with a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-3 edge in penalty corners. Merlijn van der Vegt recorded a pair of saves for the Cards while Brandelynn Heinbaugh had two stops and Katie Fricke added another for the Dukes (2-6).
Â
"This was pretty nice win on a gorgeous day against a great opponent in James Madison," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We knew it was going to be a battle today, so to have a positive result is very pleasing. The game was a little up and down, but I think when we were playing our best hockey, we looked really good. Perhaps we need to take a better look at consistency. I think if we can put together four good quarters, we can be a really dangerous team."
Â
The Cards wasted little time getting on the scoreboard when Chloe Plumb deflected a penalty corner shot from Julie Kouijzer midway through the first quarter.
Â
The second quarter brought two more Louisville goals as the Cards extended their lead to 3-0. Aimee Plumb struck in the opening minutes of the frame when she connected on a feed from Rylie Wollerton. Kaczmarczyk continued the scoring when she slid a feed from Lara Niebler into the cage.
Â
Louisville took the 3-0 lead into halftime after outshooting JMU 8-1 and holding a 4-0 penalty corner advantage.
Â
The Dukes dialed up their offense in the third quarter when they tallying a pair of corners and firing off three shots. Mia Julian found the back of the cage with an assist from Lila Harlock in the 10th minute of the frame to put JMU on the board.
Â
The Cardinals answered in the second minute of the fourth quarter when Kaczmarczyk used penalty corner assists from Aimee Plumb and Tatum Kroon to notch her second goal of the game and bring the score to 4-1.
Â
Louisville will continue non-conference play on Tuesday with a trip to Oxford, Ohio to face Miami (Ohio).
