Four different Cardinals score, Louisville posts its second straight shutout

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The No. 15-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Michigan State 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Ralph Young Field.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 4-0 on the season, their best start since the 2023 campaign. The Spartans drop to 2-2.

"Very pleased with the result and more importantly a number of pieces we had identified this weekend we needed to make progress on," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "It was a balanced weekend with everyone gaining valuable experience and contributing to our success."

Four different players contributed to the scoring column with goals from Chloe Plumb, Lauren Masters, Tyler Everslage and Annabel Sep and assists from Jaelen Perez, Addison Jay and Uba. Goalkeepers Emily Young and Katie Hume registered a save apiece to help Louisville earn its second straight defensive shutout.

After a scoreless first quarter, Plumb put the Cardinals on the scoreboard early in the second frame. After earning a penalty corner, Aubreigh Uba's initial shot was stopped by MSU goalkeeper Catherine Wolf, but Plumb gathered the rebound and found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season.

The Cardinals took the 1-0 lead into halftime after holding an 8-0 advantage in shots and a 6-0 edge in penalty corners through the first 30 minutes of play.

Louisville struck again in the opening minute of the third quarter when Masters connected on a penalty corner feed from Uba. Six minutes later, a cross from Perez found Everslage who put the Cards up 3-0 with her second goal of the season.

The fourth quarter brought the final goal of the game as the Cards capitalized on their 12^th corner of the contest. Jay got the play started and Perez provided the stop for Sep who fired a shot into the cage for her second goal of the season.

Overall, Louisville outshot Michigan State 19-3 with an 11-2 margin landing on goal and owned a 12-2 advantage in corners. MSU goalkeepers Catherine Wolf and Lola Munoz de Verger combined for six stops and the Spartans added a defensive save.

The Cardinals will wrap up their four-game road swing next weekend when they travel to Evanston, Ill., to face No. 1 Northwestern and No. 4 Iowa.
