October 09, 2026 | Field Hockey
Cards fall 4-2 at No. 11 Syracuse
Â
The Cardinals 9-5 (3-2 ACC) battled throughout the game with goals from seniors Chloe Plumb and Gigi Edwards and nine saves by senior goalkeeper Emily Young, but Syracuse (7-3, 2-2) prevailed for the home victory. Â
Â
Both teams found offense early in the game with Syracuse taking an early lead behind Aubrey Turner's goal in the fifth minute of the contest. The Cardinals answered with 35 seconds remaining in the first quarter when Plumb connected on her fourth goal of the season to even the score at 1-1.
Â
Syracuse held possession throughout the majority of the second quarter, outshooting Louisville 9-1 with Young turning back six of their attempts.
Â
Through the first 30 minutes play, Syracuse owned an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal with Young collecting seven saves. The Orange also led in corners by a 12-1 margin entering halftime.
Â
In the opening minutes of the third quarter Syracuse found the back of the cage again when Bo Madden converted on a penalty stroke to put the Orange back on top. They added to their lead with a penalty corner goal by Jess Liddell to make the score 3-1 with 15 seconds left in the third quarter.
Â
The Cards countered than two minutes into the fourth quarter when Lauren Masters caused a Syracuse turnover and made her way into the circle. The senior sent a cross to Edwards who directed a shot past Syracuse goalkeeper Jessie Eiselin to pull within Louisville within one goal.
Â
With just 4:44 left in regulation, Young was lifted in favor of an extra field player and Syracuse capitalized with an empty net goal by Jovie Weaver, extending the lead to 4-2.
Â
Overall the Orange outshot Louisville 18-9 with a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal and an 11-6 edge in penalty corners and Eiselin posted two saves in goal.
Â
"Syracuse were the better team today, credit to them," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "They had too much possession through our inability to retain the ball for any length of time. Their midfield line was very good, which enabled them to control the game for long periods. We had some very good moments, however we need to be more consistent on both sides of the ball. We look forward to getting home and some much needed rest as we prepare for Duke."
Â
Louisville will return to Trager Stadium for its regular season home finale on October 17 when the Cards play host to No. 3 Duke. The weekend marks the culmination of the Cardinals season-long celebration marking 50 years as an NCAA sanctioned sport.
