Cards close out a four-game road swing against the top-two teams in the nation this weekend

The No. 14-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team will hit the road to face the top-two teams in the nation this weekend. The Cards will visit Evanston, Ill., to play No. 1 Northwestern Friday and take on No. 2 Iowa in a neutral site matchup on Sunday.

QUICK HITS
• The Cardinals bring a 4-0 record into the weekend following a pair of shutout road wins at Saint Louis and Michigan State.
• Louisville is ranked No. 14 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll released on Sept. 8. The Cards moved up one spot from last week's ranking.
• Louisville has outscored its opponents 10-2 and outshot them 30-5 through the first four games. Six different players have scored so far this year.
• Gigi Edwards and Annabel Sep lead the team with five points with two goals and one assist each.
• Emily Young has surrendered only two goals with 23 saves in 252:45 minutes of play for a 0.45 goals against average and a .920 save percentage.
• Young, who was named NFHCA DI National and ACC Defensive Player of Week on Sept. 1 and 2 respectively, posted her 100th career save in the 2-1 shootout win over then-No. 10 Miami (Ohio) on Aug. 28.
• Lauren Masters, Jaelen Perez, Gracie Potter and Annabel Sep were named to the NFHCA Collegiate Watch List.
• Sep was also named to the Preseason All-ACC Team
• The 2026 Louisville field hockey co-captains are: Sophia Parker, Chloe Plumb and Emily Young
• Louisville was picked to finish eighth in the ACC preseason coaches poll.
• Louisville's Trager Stadium will also serve as the host site for the 2026 NCAA Field Hockey Championship November 20-22. It will be the seventh time that Trager Stadium will have served as the host site for event.
• In 2025, Louisville posted an 8-10 record and reached the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship which was held at Trager Stadium.
• The Cardinals return 16 letterwinners from last season including all-ACC selection Annabel Sep and USWNT U21 Team member Lauren Masters. Louisville also welcomes eight newcomers to the team. The 2026 roster also features Louisville natives Tyler Everslage, Megan Mauzy, Tatum Bohnert, Riley Guy and Reese Johnson.
• Justine Sowry has led Louisville to 198 wins in her time at Louisville.
• Sowry entering her 16th season at the helm. During her tenure, Sowry has guided the Cardinals to nine NCAA tournament appearances, advancing to the quarterfinals in three of the last six years and reaching the semifinals in 2020.

• The Cardinals will return to Trager Stadium for their ACC opener against Boston College on Friday followed by a matchup against Saint Joseph's on Sunday.

Northwestern
Series History: Louisville leads 9-6
Last Meeting: Sept. 12, 2025 - Northwestern won 2-1 (OT) in Louisville.
Scouting the Wildcats: the Wildcats: Northwestern enters the weekend ranked No. 1 in the nation with a 4-0
record, with wins over VCU, Lafayette, No. 9 Duke, and Boston College.
• Two-time defending national champion Northwestern entered the season as the unanimous No. 1-ranked team in the NFHCA Preseason Poll, remaining in that spot for the past three weeks.
• Ilse Tromp leads the Wildcats in goals scored with three, while also leading the way in shots on goal with 11.
• Leading the way in goal for Northwestern is Juliana Boon, who has made 11 saves and only allowed three goals through four games.
• Head Coach Tracey Fuchs has been at the helm since 2009, becoming the winningest head coach in school history in 2025, while also leading the Wildcats to three national championships in 2021, 2024, and 2025.
• The teams have split the last 10 games of the series, with each team winning five. During those games, the teams have also been even in scoring, with 12 goals apiece.

Scouting the Hawkeyes:
• The Hawkeyes entered the season ranked No. 11 in the NFHCA Preseason Poll, before rising to No. 2 after starting the season 4-0.
• Frederique van Cleef leads Iowa in goals scored, while also tying for the team lead in assists with three, along with Amber Millard-Smith.
• In goal for the Hawkeyes is Abby Johnson, who is coming off back-to-back shutouts and has made 11 saves this season.
• Head Coach Lisa Cellucci has been at Iowa for 27 seasons, 13 of which have been as the head coach. She has led Iowa to four NCAA quarterfinal appearances in the past five seasons, including a Final Four appearance in 2021.
• Louisville has a 6-4 edge in the last 10 meetings, outscoring the Hawkeyes 17-15.
