Aubreigh Uba's goal in overtime lifts Louisville to a 3-2 win at No. 17 California

BERKELEY, Calif. – Senior Aubreigh Uba's goal with 3:12 left in overtime lifted the No. 12-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 3-2 win over No. 17 California in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Friday evening at Underhill Field.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 7-2 (2-0 ACC) while the Golden Bears drop to 5-2 (0-1).

"Happy to get our first ACC win in California," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Cal has some dangerous players and we allowed too much time and space. We have so much potential, but we have to come together to play the hockey we know how to play. We learned some hard lessons and will continue to move forward to become a more consistent team."

Uba's game-winner marked the only time the Cardinals led in the contest. Senior Tyler Everslage registered her team-best fourth goal and junior Mary Wordelmann delivered her first score of the season, each answering a Cal goal to bring the Cards even. Current ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week senior goalkeeper Emily Young collected eight saves including one in overtime.

The Golden Bears got on the scoreboard in the sixth minute of the contest with a penalty corner goal by Jaiya Labana. The Cards had a chance to even the score when they were awarded a penalty stroke midway through the first quarter, but Cal goalkeeper Carine Van Weichen turned back Uba's attempt with a diving stick save to keep Louisville off the scoreboard.

Cal took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting Louisville 10-3 with a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-0 edge in corners. Young posted six first half saves while Van Weichen tallied two.

After only one goal in the first 30 minutes, the third quarter featured three goals between the teams. Louisville broke through in the opening minutes of third quarter. After earning their first penalty corner of the game, the Cards capitalized on the opportunity when Everslage connected on a rebound from Annabel Sep's initial shot to tie the game at 1-1.

The Bears regained the lead less than a minute later with a goal by Agustina Daud to put her team back on top 2-1.

Undaunted, the Cardinals countered again. Jaelen Perez sent a feed into the circle and found the stick of a Cal defender, but Mary Wordleman was there to collect the ball and send it past Van Weichen, knotting the score at 2-2 with 9:53 left in the third quarter. The teams exchanged shots for the remainder of the frame, but the score stood at 2-2.

In the fourth quarter, the teams were locked in a midfield battle with neither able to generate many scoring opportunities. The Bears had a chance in the final two minutes of regulation, but Young came up big with a save to hold them at bay.

With the score still knotted at 2-2 at the end of the fourth quarter, the game entered a 15-minute sudden-victory overtime period.

In the extra frame, the Cardinals' withstood a Cal attack with a save by Young and a defensive stand on a Bear penalty corner. After a clear by Young, Louisville worked the ball down the field and Chloe Plumb earned the Cards' second penalty corner of the contest. Lauren Masters got the corner started and Tamera Cookman provided the stop for Annabel Sep's shot. Plumb redirected the ball to Uba who found the back of the cage for her third goal of the season.

In the game, Cal outshot Louisville 19-9 with a 10-7 margin landing on goal, and held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.

The Cardinals will stay in Berkeley for a non-conference game against UC Davis on Sunday.
