Louisville shut out for the first time this season

BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 12-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell 1-0 to UC Davis in a neutral site matchup at Underhill Field Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 7-3 while the Aggies move to 3-6 on the season.

"That is a tough result for our team," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Credit to UC Davis for taking it to us. They had all of the opportunities early on, and their goalkeeper made a couple of key saves."

In the game, Louisville held an 8-7 edge in shots while UC Davis owned a 3-1 margin in shots on goal and led 5-2 in penalty corners. Emily Young collected two saves and UC Davis goalkeeper Addison Collingwood posted one stop.

After the teams played through a scoreless first half, UC Davis broke through early in the third quarter with a goal by Molly Main.

Louisville increased its attack in the fourth quarter, firing off three shots and earning a corner in the final three minutes of the game, but the Aggies' defense stood strong to keep the Cards off of the scoreboard in their first shutout loss of the season.

"Momentum was the winner today and our opponent took advantage of that," said Sowry. "If we can take some of those hard lessons today and use them to our advantage, we will be better off moving forward. We must regroup for this coming weekend with some key ACC games."

UofL will return to action with a pair of ACC matchups next weekend when North Carolina and Stanford visit Trager Stadium on Friday and Sunday respectively.
