Cards register their second shutout of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The fifth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Miami (Ohio) 2-0 Tuesday afternoon at Miami's Field Hockey Complex.
Â
"To come away with a win against a very talented Miami lineup on the road is, obviously, very pleasing," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "They have always been a very difficult team to play against, and today was no exception. We were able to generate some good attacking opportunities and played some discipline defense. Now our focus is on Virginia at home on Friday night with a quick turnaround."
Â
Tyler Everslage and Aimee Plumb registered a goal apiece and Merlijn van der Vegt posted a save en route to their second shutout of the season. In the game, Louisville outshot Miami 13-1 and held a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Â
The Cards (8-1) maintained possession throughout the majority of the first half, outshooting the RedHawks 10-0. Miami withstood four Louisville penalty corners and goalkeeper Isabelle Perese stopped five shots on goal for the RedHawks to keep the Cardinals score off the scoreboard in the first half.
Â
The Cardinals broke through just 37 seconds into the third quarter when Niamh Gowing sent a cross from the right side of the circle to Tyler Everslage fired a shot into the cage for her third goal of the season. Â
Â
The Cards added an insurance goal early in the fourth quarter when Aimee Plumb connected on feed from Lauren Masters to notch her team-best fifth goal of the season.
Â
The RedHawks (7-4) had an opportunity to cut the lead in half after earning a penalty corner with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Â but van der Vegt turned back Claudia Negrete Garcia's shot on goal to maintain the shutout.
Â
UofL will return to action when seventh-ranked Virginia visits Trager Stadium for a top-10 Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Friday at 3 p.m.
