Cards fall 4-2 against No. 2 Iowa

EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 14-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team lost 4-2 to No. 2 Iowa Sunday afternoon in a neutral site matchup at Northwestern's Lakeside Field.

Chloe Plumb had a goal and an assist and Annabel Sep notched her third goal of the season while goalkeeper Emily Young posted five saves as the Cardinals (4-2) battled against their second straight ranked opponent following Friday's matchup with No. 1 Northwestern in the Midwest Challenge.

"Iowa is an impressive opponent with clinical finishing ability. With that being said, you almost need to be perfect defensively to keep them off the scoreboard," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. " We competed hard and matched well at times, however we need to clean up a few areas moving forward. This weekend has been extremely beneficial, playing the best in country and no doubt will help us prepare for ACC competition next Friday."

Iowa (6-0) got on the scoreboard with a goal by Frederique van Cleef in the eighth minute of the game. The Cards answered four minutes later, capitalizing on their first penalty corner of the contest. Plumb inserted the ball and Jaelen Perez provided the stop for Sep, whose shot found the back of the cage to even the score at 1-1 with under three minutes left in the frame.

The Hawkeyes regained the lead early in the second quarter behind Dionne von Aalsum's first goal of the game. Louisville threatened again, earning a corner with just over five minutes left in the half, but Tyler Everslage's shot was stopped by Northwestern goalkeeper Abby Johnson. Iowa went on to take the 2-1 lead into the break, after outshooting Louisville 7-3 and each team earning a pair of penalty corners.

The teams exchanged goals in third quarter with Iowa striking early with another score by von Aalsom to push the Hawkeyes' lead to 3-1. Louisville countered again nearly three minutes later with another penalty corner goal as Plumb connected on a feed from Tyler Everslage to pull the Cards within one.

In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter van Cleef's second goal of the contest gave Iowa a 4-2 lead. The Hawkeyes' defense held the Cards in check for the remainder of the game.

Overall, Iowa outshot Louisville 14-5 with a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-4 edge in corners.

UofL will return to Trager Stadium next weekend for a pair of games starting with its Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Boston College on Friday at 6 p.m.
