Cards open road stretch with 3-0 win at Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS – The No. 15 University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Saint Louis 3-0 Friday afternoon at SLU Field Hockey Complex.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 3-0 on the season while the Billikens drop to 0-3.

Gigi Edwards delivered a goal and an assist while Tyler Everslage and Anabel Sep each added a goal. The Cardinals' defense limited SLU to just one shot on goal en route to their first shutout of the season.

"Tough conditions {in the heat] today, so it was great to come away with a win," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "There were moments where we executed what was asked and taking away their transitional play was a highlight."

The teams played through a scoreless first quarter before Edwards put the Cardinals on the scoreboard in the fifth minute of the second quarter for her second goal of the season. Four minutes later, a feed from Sophia Parker found Everslage who gave Louisville a 2-0 lead.

The Cards tacked on their final goal in the closing seconds of the contest when Sep connected on penalty corner assists from Edwards and Parker.

Overall, Louisville outshot Saint Louis 25-1 with a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-2 edge in corners. Billiken goalkeeper Abby Schalow collected 10 saves in the game.

"The Saint Louis goalkeeper was outstanding today and kept them in the game right until the end," said Sowry. "We are looking for more consistency on both sides of the ball as we move forward in the season."

Louisville will wrap up the weekend on Sunday when they travel to East Lansing, Mich., to take on Michigan State in a 12 p.m. matchup.
