Goalkeeper Emily Young tallies career-high 10 saves, but UNC advance with a 2-1 victory
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 8-seeded University of Louisville Field Hockey team fell to No. 1-seeded and No. 1-ranked North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship by a score of 2-1. Â
"Obviously disappointed to lose today, but at the same time I couldn't be more proud of this resilient group," said head coach Justine Sowry. "Lots of the ups and downs in the season. Lots of different things try to knock us off base, but they're just an incredible group. They just kept fighting and fighting and everyday they put in the work. We had to tweak our lineup a lot throughout the season and just really felt like the last few weeks we were coming together. Today I thought we gave [North] Carolina a fight. We did see them get a little bit frustrated so I guess that was pleasing, but we just have to hang on." Â
Goalkeeper Emily Young notched a career-high 10 saves in the contest, holding the No. 1-ranked North Carolina offense to two goals in 56 minutes of play. Junior Annabel Sep registered two defensive saves.Â
Senior Rylie Wollerton scored her team leading 11th goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1, but the Tar Heels pulled ahead in the fourth quarter to prevail 2-1.Â
In the game, North Carolina held a 14-1 shots on goal advantage and earned a total of 15 penalty corners compared to Louisville's two.Â
The Tar Heels struck first 25 minutes into the game courtesy of a goal by Isabel Boere, giving them a 1-0 lead heading into the break.Â
Wollerton knotted the game for the Cards with an unassisted goal two minutes into the second half.Â
Tied heading into the fourth quarter, North Carolina used one of its seven penalty corners in the period to score the go-ahead goal and go up 2-1
With 3:09 left to play, Young was lifted in favor of an extra field player and Louisville gained possession, but the Cards were unable to register a shot in that span.
"I want to take a moment to thank our wonderful seniors," said Sowry. "They're culture kids through and through. Everyday they put out the effort and kept this group together no matter what the circumstances. Proud of them and they can be proud of what they've been able to do for this program. And I know they'll be really successful in life. Go Cards."Â
Lousiville ends its season 8-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play with a total of four ranked wins on the season.Â
