July 13, 2023 | Men's Soccer
Louisville has added Mason Tatatu and Xavi Wences to its 2023 roster.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer program and head coach John Michael Hayden have announced the addition of two more student-athletes for the 2023 season.
Mason Tatafu and Xavi Wences are the latest student-athletes to be announced as part of the 2023 signing class.
"We are thrilled that Mason Tatafu and Xavi Wences will be joining us this fall," Hayden said. "Both players have had good experiences at their former institutions and are now looking for a new challenge competing in college soccer's premier conference.
"In our recruitment of players, we always seek to find players that not only fit our style of play but also our culture which we feel they most certainly do. I look forward to integrating them into an already talented squad."
Tatafu transfers to UofL from Hofstra, where he played a pair of seasons for the Pride. The defender appeared in 37 career games with 33 starts. Tatafu tallied four goals and an assist in nearly 2,900 minutes on the pitch.
The Perth, Australia native was the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year in 2021 in addition to earning All-CAA and CAA All-Rookie honors.
Wences comes to the Cardinals after two years at USC Upstate. Over two seasons, the midfielder out of Mexico City, Mexico played in 30 matches. Last fall, Wences started 15 of 17 matches, tallying a pair of goals and an assist in 1,041 minutes.
Hayden is set to begin his fifth season leading the Louisville program after guiding the Cardinals to a third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years last fall.
After a pair of road exhibitions, Louisville opens up the 2023 season at home against Tulsa on August 24 at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
