Louisville Soccer Completes Unbeaten Spring with CSL Championship

The Cardinals capped off a strong spring by winning the College Spring League title.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team put together a strong spring season that culminated in a championship.
"This has been one of the most productive springs I've been a part of since coming to Louisville," head coach John Michael Hayden said. "The group really embraced what it means to wear the Louisville uniform and I believe have now helped shape new standards that we will carry into the fall."
Hayden's group competed in the College Spring League that featured eight Division I programs, including 2020 national champion Marshall.
Louisville opened up group play with a 2-1 win at Ohio State, getting goals from Brandon McManus and Josh Jones. The Cardinals followed that up with a clean sheet on the road at Xavier in a 2-0 victory with goals by Konstantinos Georgallides and Gage Guerra.
The Cards closed out a perfect 3-0-0 record in group play with another 2-0 victory, this time over Marshall at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Guerra tallied his second goal of the spring, while Bradley Sample found the net as well.
Louisville was the only team to win all three matches in group play, earning the top seed in the South Division and a spot in the CSL championship match against North Division winner Cleveland State at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
The championship match finished regulation level at one, with Louisville getting its only goal on a penalty kick from Georgallides. With the two teams even at four in penalties, it was Georgallides converting from the spot once again to secure the championship for the Cards.
"Winning the College Spring League was a fantastic accomplishment given we played four solid teams," Hayden said. "Three of the teams we played made the 2022 NCAA Tournament and Xavier went 9-2-7 last fall."
"Lifting a trophy is never easy so I'm delighted that we were rewarded for our hard work and commitment."
Jones was named the 2023 CSL Most Valuable Player, while Alex Svetanoff captured the 2023 CSL Golden Glove Award. Sander Roed also earned All-CSL honors.
Louisville, which finished last fall with a 9-6-3 record and a NCAA Tournament bid, will now break for the summer, where its players will compete with outside clubs before returning to prepare for the upcoming 2023 season.
