Louisville Comes Up Short Against No. 25 Wake Forest

Cards battle, but fall short in 5-2 loss to the 25th-ranked Demon Deacons
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team battled with No. 25 Wake Forest, but fell short 5-2 in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Â

Wake Forest (12-7, 3-3 ACC) took an early lead in match with doubles wins on courts one and three. The 26th-ranked Demon Deacon duo of Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth defeated Andrea DiPalma and Rhea Verma 6-2 to give Wake an early edge. The Cardinals fought back with a win on court three as Jamilah Snells and Cici Xin upended Nevena Carton and Maddie Lynch 6-1 to even the doubles tally. The first point of the match was decided on court two where Louisville's Sasha Gorchanyuk and Maria Campos went up 4-1, but the Wake Forest duo of Mia Ahmad and Casie Wooten battled back to prevail 7-5 to secure the first point of the match.

In singles, the Cardinals evened the match score with Maria Campos' 6-0, 6-2 win over Mia Ahmad 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 6. 0.

The Demon Deacons countered with wins on courts two and four to take a 3-1 lead, but Louisville bounced back at the No. 1 spot where Di Palma took down No. 41-ranked Wooten 7-6 (1), 7-5 to make the match score 3-2 with courts three and five locked in third set battles.

At No. 3, Verma rebounded from a 6-0 first set loss to Killingsworth to pick up a 6-4 win in the second. The players traded games in the decisive third set before Killingsworth prevailed 7-5 to seal the win for the Demon Deacons.

In the final singles match on court, Xin fell 6-2 in her first set against Lynch, but battled back to take the second set 7-5 before falling 6-2 in the third.

Louisville (8-9, 0-7 ACC) will return to action on Sunday when eighth-ranked NC State visits the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center for a 12 p.m. matchup.
