Cards Shut Out Bellarmine in Home Opener

Cassie Grizzard picks up the win and shutout in her first career start, Paige Geraghty ties career high with five RBIs
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team defeated Bellarmine 13-0 in its home opener Tuesday evening at Ulmer Stadium. With their fifth-straight win, the Cardinals improve to 11-4 on the season.

In her first collegiate start in the circle, Cassie Grizzard (1-1) scattered three hits and tied a career-high with four strikeouts as she went the distance in the five-inning shutout. Junior Paige Geraghty led the Cardinals at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and a triple while tying her career high RBI total with five in the contest.

In addition to Geraghty's game-high performance, Vanessa Miller went 2-for-2 with two runs and Hess went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, a stolen base and two runs.

Louisville got the offense started early, capitalizing on six hits including Sarah Gordon's two-run double to score seven runs in the first inning.

The scoring continued with a pair of runs in the second inning. Vanessa Miller's single and walks to Taylor Roby and Ally Alexander loaded the bases, Geraghty collected two of her RBIs with a single to centerfield, extending the Cardinals' lead to 9-0.

The third inning brought two more Louisville runs courtesy of Korbe Otis' two-run homer. Daisy Hess earned a leadoff walk to set up the current ACC Player of the Week who smashed a shot over the left field fence for her third home run of the season.

Geraghty's two-run triple capped the scoring in the fourth inning. Freshman Madison 'Pickle' Winkler delivered her first career hit to start the home half of the frame and Makayla Hurst followed with a walk to bring up Geraghty who cleared the base with her second triple of the season. Â

Claire Lehmkuhler (0-7) took the loss for Bellarmine (1-14) after surrendering seven runs, six earned, on six hits and striking out one in 2/3 inning. Anna Greenwell, Megan Konermann and Abbey Nesnidal each registered a hit for the Knights.
