February 24, 2023 | Baseball
Louisville defeated Bowling Green 2-1 in the series opener on Friday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The fourth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team recorded its fifth consecutive victory to start the season with a 2-1 win over Bowling Green on Friday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (5-0) needed just one hour, 46 minutes to secure the win, the fastest nine-inning UofL game on record since at least 2000 and the fastest game for the Cards overall since March 7, 2004 when they played a seven-inning game against Kent State in one hour, 37 minutes.
Ryan Hawks was dominant on the mound for the second straight Friday. The junior gave up just one unearned run over 7.1 innings while striking out eight.
The Cardinals gave him an early run on a Jack Payton home run in the bottom of the first inning, the second of the year for the junior.
Bowling Green (1-3) plated its lone run in the top of the sixth to tie the game, but the Cards grabbed the lead back in the seventh.
Payton led off the bottom of the seventh with a double down the right field line. After a groundout moved Payton to third, Eddie King Jr. drove in the eventual winning run with a groundball past the drawn-in infield.
Hawks recorded the first out of the eighth and Greg Farone took care of the final five outs for his first save of the season.
Payton was 2-for-3, scoring both of Louisville's runs and half of the Cardinals' hits on the day.
Louisville and Bowling Green continue the weekend series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
