Cardinals Make Four Podiums and Set Two Records on Day 1 at ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of Louisville swimming and diving team earned four medals and set two school records in the first day of competition at the 2023 ACC Championships Tuesday evening at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.Â
All four relays made the podium and helped propel the Cardinals women into third place and the men into sixth. North Carolina State is leading the men's field after one day with a total of 196 followed by North Carolina (147), Notre Dame (145), Virginia Tech (137), Pitt (133.5), Louisville (130.5), Florida State (115), Virginia (104), Duke (82), Georgia Tech (74), Miami (74) and Boston College 32. North Carolina leads the women's field with 202 points ahead of Virginia (166), Louisville (160), NC State (140), Notre Dame (126), Florida State (118), Miami (112), Virginia Tech (111), Duke (107), Pitt (84), Georgia Tech (76) and Boston College (60).

In the first race of the event, the Cardinals broke a school record and won bronze in the 200 medley when Abby Hay (23.54), Cecilia Viberg (27.25), Christiana Regenauer (22.56) and Gabi Albiero (20.88) combined for a 1:34.23. The foursome shaved .78 of a second off their entry time and Abby Hay's opening backstroke leg split of 23.54 broke a school record. The final time was also tops in school history and qualified as an NCAA A-Cut.  The event was won by Virginia's 1:31.73, a time that broke the ACC, NCAA, ACC Championship, US Open and American records .

The men made the podium in their race as they scraped more than a half second off their entry time with a bronze medal time of 1:23.59 put up by Charlie Crush (21.65), Denis Petrashov (23.29), Dalton Lowe (20.06) and a blazing anchor by Abdelrahman El-Araby, who went 18.59. The event was won by NC State, with the Wolfpack posting a 1:22.25.

Diver Else Praasterink advanced to the finals in the 3M springboard, qualifying 7th after prelims. The junior from the Netherlands, finished fifth with a mark of 322.45 after six rounds. In women's prelims earlier in the day, Lindsay Gizzi scored with a 13th place score of 281.30 as did Jiselle Miller, who scored a 16th place with a mark of 272.40. Grace Leonard posted a 232.25, just outside the scoring zone.

Earlier in the day, in men's 1M diving, Louisville's Che Stephens placed 12th with a score of 301.35. Adam Sneden placed 20th with a score of 272.40 and Logan Smith also scored for the Cards, finishing 24th with a 256.50.

In the 800 free relay, Louisville women won silver with a time of 6:57.51 put up by Tristen Ulett (1:45.04), Paige Hetrick (1:43.10), Fernanda Celidonio (1:44.91) and Ella Welch (1:44.46). The Cards were chasing down the Cavaliers of Virginia, who posted a 6:55.14 for gold.

In the men's 800 free relay, UofL battled NC State stroke for stroke to win silver with a time of 6:11.26 for the third fastest relay in school history. Murilo Sartori started the Cards off in the leadoff leg with a time of 1:32.93. Denis Loktev was next with a split of 1:33.21 followed by Guy Brooks' 1:32.66. Senior Michael Eastman's 1:32.46 leg was almost enough to out-touch the Wolfpack (6:10.65) in a tightly-contested finish.
