LAST TIME OUT
Louisville used a Sander Roed hat trick and a Josh Jones game-winner in the 89th minute to take down second-ranked and top-seeded Notre Dame 4-3 in the quarterfinal round on Sunday.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
The Cardinals have reached the semifinal round for the fourth time since joining the ACC prior to the 2014 season, but the first time since 2018. Louisville is searching for its third ACC Championship final appearance, having previously played for the title in 2014 and 2018.
The winner of Wednesday's semifinal will play the winner of Syracuse and North Carolina in the title match on Sunday at noon ET in Cary, N.C.
SERIES HISTORY
Wednesday's semifinal match will be the 12th all-time meeting between Louisville and Clemson. The Tigers hold a narrow 6-4-1 edge in the 11 previous meetings, including a 4-0 victory over Louisville last month.
Louisville and Clemson have met once previously in ACC Championship play, squaring off in the 2014 ACC title match. The Cardinals led 1-0 for most of the match before Clemson found the tying goal with three seconds left in regulation. The Tigers then notched the game-winner in the second overtime period to secure the championship.
ROED TURNS IN CAREER NIGHT AT NO. 2 NOTRE DAME
Junior midfielder Sander Roed had a night to remember in the ACC quarterfinal round at No. 2 and top-seeded Notre Dame.
The Norwegian scored the opening goal on his first touch just seconds after subbing on and then struck for two more goals in the opening seven minutes of the second half. Roed wasn't done there though, as he assisted on Josh Jones' game-winning goal in the 89th minute to send the Cardinals into the semifinals.
The hat trick was the first by a Louisville player since Mohamed Thiaw against FAU in 2017 and the third postseason hat trick in program history, joining Colin Rolfe against Providence in the 2011 Big East Tournament and Dylan Mares versus Winthrop in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. It was also just the second hat trick in ACC Championship history, joining Wake Forest's Ihor Dotsenko in 1997.
Roed's seven points on the night were an ACC Championship record, and the most by a Louisville player since George Zabaneh tallied 10 points on five goals at Belmont on Oct. 16, 1999.
JONES AND ROED TEAM UP AGAIN FOR SET PIECE MAGIC
Louisville juniors Josh Jones and Sander Roed have formed a dynamic duo on set pieces since they arrived on campus for the 2021 season.
That pair struck again on Sunday in the ACC quarterfinals at Notre Dame, with Roed finding Jones for the game-winning header on a free kick in the 89th minute.
The goal was Jones' second of the season and seventh of his career. All seven goals in his career have been assisted by Roed and have come on set pieces, including three game-winners.
