Cardinals Travel to Northern Kentucky
August 27, 2022 | Women's Soccer
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's soccer team is hitting the road for the first time in 2022 as they make the short trip north to face off with Northern Kentucky. The Cardinals and Norse are set to face off from NKU Soccer Stadium Sunday at 7 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Last season, Louisville tallied a 3-2-1 road record and came away victorious in their one road non-conference matchup against St. Louis. Sunday's match will be the first of three-straight away from home as the Cards head to Harrisonburg, Va. next weekend to take on Memphis and James Madison.
So far through two games this year, graduate student Maisie Whitsett has had a knack for the ball, as she has contributed on all four Cardinal goals. In the season-opener, she tallied a goal and an assist while her free kick led to the third goal in the win over UIC. She scored against Xavier on a free kick for her second goal of the season. It was the fifth-time in her career that she has scored in two-straight games.
ABOUT THE NORSE
Northern Kentucky finished the 2021 season with a 10-8-2 overall record and 7-4-0 in Horizon play. As a team, the Norse registered 24 goals and 73 saves through 20 games. The Norse attack is led by junior forward Sofia Wilmes, who scored a team-high five goals last season. Junior midfielder Kaya Vogt led the team with four assists and goalkeeper Mimi Stones returns in net after making 65 saves and 18 starts in 2021. So far in the 2022 campaign, the Norse are 0-2-0 after falling to Cincinnati (0-2) and Dayton (0-3).
SERIES HISTORY
Louisville holds a 2-0 all-time series advantage against Northern Kentucky. The two squads faced off in Louisville last season with the Cardinals earning a 3-0 victory. Hayley Howard scored her first career goal to open the scoring in the 17th minute. Delaney Snyder and Emma Hiscock also added goals as Gabby Kouzelos collected her first clean sheet of the season.
Sunday's matchup in Highland Heights will be the first time the Cardinals traveled to Northern Kentucky in the series history.
