Cardinals Walked Off in Game One of Super Regional
June 11, 2022 | Baseball
Louisville lost 5-4 in the opening game against Texas A&M.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A bases loaded single with two outs in the ninth downed the seventh-ranked University of Louisville baseball team in the opening game of the NCAA Super Regional at No. 3 Texas A&M on Friday night.
Louisville (42-20-1) is once again one loss away from elimination as it heads into game two on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The Cardinals won three consecutive elimination games in last weekend's NCAA Regional and will need two more this weekend.
Texas A&M (41-18) cashed in a scoring opportunity in the first with a bases loaded hit by pitch forcing home the game's first run. However, Jared Poland picked up his third strikeout of the inning to strand three.
The Cardinals answered right back in the second. Jack Payton and Cameron Masterman each singled to centerfield and Isaac Humphrey drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Logan Beard then delivered a single back through the middle that scored a pair and gave Louisville the lead. Ben Bianco followed with a sacrifice fly and the Cards extended their lead to 3-1.
Poland stranded the bases loaded again in the second and limited the Aggies to a single run in the third that cut Louisville's lead in half.
The Cards pushed the margin back out to two in the fifth with Ben Metzinger doubling inside the third base bag to score Christian Knapczyk from first.
Louisville threatened again in the sixth after a Masterman double and Humphrey single to lead off the inning. However, the Cards were unable to get the run across and remained in front by two.
Tate Kuehner took over for Poland and got the final out of the fifth before running into trouble in the sixth. The Aggies loaded the bases with one away, but the southpaw tallied back-to-back strikeouts to end the scoring chance.
Texas A&M finally tied the game up in the seventh, getting a two-run homer with one away that dropped just beyond the outstretched arm of Levi Usher scaling the wall in centerfield. The Aggies then put runners on the corners with two outs before Alex Galvan entered and induced a fly out to keep the game even at four.
Louisville left two runners on in its half of the eighth and Texas A&M once again loaded the bases in the bottom half of the frame. Needing another big pitching sequence, Michael Prosecky dug in and picked up his second strikeout of the inning to strand three more A&M runners.
Following a scoreless top of the ninth, A&M finally found the game-winning hit in the bottom half. After a leadoff walk, Prosecky retired the next two hitters before a single and hit by pitch put a runner at every base. A first-pitch single through the right side then drove home the winning run to give the Aggies the 1-0 series edge.
Poland took a no-decision on the night, allowing two runs over 4.2 innings with seven strikeouts.
Metzinger and Masterman each had three hits, combining for six of Louisville's 10 hits on the night.
