Louisville Falls in Doubleheader at No. 20/21 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Louisville softball team fell 5-0 and 5-1 in a doubleheader at No. 20/21 Notre Dame Saturday at Melissa Cook Stadium.

The Cardinals (27-23, 10-13 ACC) and the Fighting Irish (38-9, 15-5) will meet in the series finale on Sunday at 2 p.m. in an ACC Network televised game.

#20/21 Notre Dame 5 – Louisville 0
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Cardinals got hits from Korbe Otis, Kendall Smith, Vanessa Miller and Jenna Servi, but Notre Dame pitcher Payton Tidd and the Irish defense held the Cardinals in check.

Notre Dame used three hits and an error to plate a pair of unearned runs behind Miranda Johnson's two out, two-run single which put the Irish on top 2-0.

The fourth inning brought another unearned run for Notre Dame. Karina Gaskins' leadoff homer in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the sixth extended the lead to 5-0. Â

The Cardinals' best chance to score came in the fifth when Alexander and Miller delivered back-to-back hits and advanced on Carmyn Greenwood's flyout to centerfield to put two runners in scoring position, but a flyout ended the top of the inning.

Taylor Roby (15-9) took the loss, allowing four runs, one earned, on six hits in four innings of work. Sam Booe surrendered one earned run and struck out one in two innings of relief. Â

Tidd (15-4) recorded the complete game win, scattering four hits and striking out three.

In game two, the Cardinals struck early with a run in the first. Otis earned a walk, moved to third on Taylor Roby's infield single and crossed the plate on Kendall Smith's groundout, giving Louisville a 1-0 lead.

The Irish answered in the bottom of the second with Johnson's two-out RBI triple to even the score at 1-1.

After the second inning, Louisville starting pitcher Taja Felder retired eight of the next nine batters until the bottom of the fifth when Johnson led off with a hit and eventually scored as a result of a Cardinal miscue. The Irish loaded the bases with nobody out, but second baseman Dylann Cravens teamed with Jenna Servi at third for a double play and Felder got a flyout to Greenwood in left field to get out of the inning with Notre Dame leading 2-1.

The Irish used three hits and an error to tack on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, extending the lead to 5-1.

Felder (2-4) took the loss after giving up five runs, two earned, on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. Carmyn Greenwood delivered her team-best 18th double of the season and Roby singled to lead the Cards at the plate. Louisville has now turned 24 double plays on the season, pulling within one of the school record set in 2019.Â
