April 29, 2022 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Kendall Smith's two-run single in the bottom of the seventh lifted the University of Louisville softball team to a 5-4 win over Virginia in the opening game of an ACC series Friday evening at Ulmer Stadium.
Â
The Cardinals (25-12, 9-10 ACC) and the Cavaliers (26-22, 12-10) will continue the series Saturday at 4 p.m. in an ACC Network televised contest. Prior to the game, Louisville will honor the graduating senior class: Rebecca Chung, Carmyn Greenwood, Cassady Greenwood, Payton Hudson and Kendall Smith.
Â
In a game that included four lead changes and seven hits for each team, Smith's walk-off single helped the Cardinals overcome a 4-3 deficit and capped a 2-for-4, three RBI performance at the plate for the graduate senior catcher. Redshirt senior Taylor Roby (14-7) went the distance in the circle to pick up the win.
Â
After Virginia took a 2-0 lead in the second, the Cardinals countered with three runs in the third. Junior Jenna Servi got the offense started with a leadoff triple and graduate senior Carmyn Greenwood followed with an RBI single. Two outs later, Smith connected on double to bring home Greenwood and then crossed the plate on senior Hannah File's double to put Louisville on top 3-2.
Â
The Cavaliers answered with a pair of runs in the fifth behind Katie Goldberg's two-run triple to regain the lead.
Â
Louisville entered the home half of the seventh still trailing 4-3 when Greenwood led off with a single and freshman Korbe Otis followed with a walk. Both runners moved on Roby's groundout to set up Smith's walk-off hit.
Â
Mikayla Houge (9-5) took the loss, giving up two earned runs on one hit and striking out two in 3.0 innings of relief.
