Poland’s Gem Lifts Cardinals Past Clemson
April 29, 2022 | Baseball
Louisville picked up a 7-2 win on Friday night.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jared Poland turned in eight shutout innings and the offense took care of the rest as the 10th-ranked University of Louisville baseball team tallied a 7-2 victory over Clemson on Friday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Poland put together a career night on Friday night. The right-hander worked the eight shutout innings for the longest outing by a Louisville starting pitcher since Luke Smith in the 2019 College World Series. Poland also tallied a career-high 13 strikeouts, the most since Michael Kirian also had a baker's dozen last March at NC State.
The night started with a leadoff walk, but Poland slammed the door shut from there. The senior struck out the side in the second and fifth innings while adding a pair of strikeouts in three other innings.
Louisville (29-12, 12-7 ACC) got the offense cranked up in the second with some fundamental baseball. Cameron Masterman and Levi Usher each reached to start the inning and Logan Beard bunted both up a base. Isaac Humphrey then cashed in the scoring chance with a sacrifice fly to get the Cards on the board.
The Cardinals loaded up the bases in the third with nobody out, but the trio of runners were still standing there with two away. Usher then battled for a nine-pitch at-bat that resulted in a defensive miscue to make it 2-0. Beard followed with a single through the right side that plated two more and doubled the advantage.
While Poland continued his work on the mound, the Cardinals pushed three more runs across in the fifth. Humphrey doubled in the first run and Ben Bianco added another with a RBI groundout. Ben Metzinger then capped off the scoring effort with an opposite field single.
Poland (3-2) retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced to close out his night before handing the ball off for the final inning.
Clemson (28-15, 6-12) broke up the shutout effort with a pair of runs in the ninth.
Metzinger led Louisville's offense on Friday night with a 3-for-5 showing at the plate. Usher and Humphrey each recorded a pair of hits.
The three-game series continues on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
