LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's golf team was selected as the No. 7 seed in the Albuquerque Regional at the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Wednesday.
The Cardinals were picked for postseason play for the eighth consecutive season and 14th time in program history after they were announced as one of 12 teams to compete in the regional. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played May 9-11 and the top four teams of each region will advance to the National Championship. The top two individuals that are not on an advancing team will also punch their tickets to the National Championship, which will be held May 20-25 in Tempe, Arizona, hosted by Arizona State.
For Louisville, the eighth straight appearance is the longest streak in program history. The Cardinals are the No. 7 seed in the 12-team region that features six teams inside the top 25 of the latest Golfstat rankings.
The regional will feature five of the top 30 teams in the nation. No. 2 Oregon is the top seed in the regional followed by No. 11 Florida, No. 13 Texas, No. 23 Arizona and No. 28 Georgia.
"I'm excited for our team to earn an opportunity to advance to the postseason for the eighth-straight season," head coach Whitney Young said. "This will be a competitive region. but I know our team is up for the challenge and excited for the chance to compete for a spot in the national championship."
The Cardinals hosted a regional last season at the University of Louisville Golf Club, finishing 11th overall and seeing Lauren Hartlage advance to the NCAA Championships as an individual. The Cards were in the final position to advance to the championship but struggled during the final round of action.
Louisville is coming off a 10th-place finish at last week's ACC Championships after Kendall Griffin finished third at the championship after shooting a 1-under-par 215. Griffin has been the top player for the Cardinals this season after transferring from LSU. She owns four top-five finishes and has posted the top stroke average on the team at 72.81.
During the 2021-22 season, the Cards recorded two wins in the fall, capturing the Illini Invitational and the Olde Stone Intercollegiate in October.
The 24 advancing teams and 12 individuals will complete for 54 holes of stroke play during the first three days of the championship. Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion.
The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket with match play to determine the national champion.
