Cards Drop Series Finale at No. 3/3 Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Louisville softball team lost to No. 3/3 Virginia Tech 7-4 in the teams' ACC series finale Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park.

Louisville (24-20, 8-10 ACC) will wrap up the home season this weekend when the Cardinals play host to Virginia for a three-game ACC series starting on Friday at 6 p.m.

In a game that featured three lead changes and a tie, Virginia Tech (36-6, 18-2 ACC) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when a double by Morgan Overaitis scored Emma Ritter and then Overaitis crossed the plate when Meredith Slaw was caught stealing second base.

The bottom of the second brought another Hokie run courtesy of Cameron Fagan's RBI single.

The Cardinals answered in the third, capitalizing on two hits and two errors to take a 4-3 lead. Carmyn Greenwood led off the frame with her 13th home run of the season to make the score 3-1. Korbe Otis reached on a two-base error and moved to third on a wild pitch and Taylor Roby walked to put runners on the corners. Otis came home on a groundout by Kendall Smith. Cravens followed with a single and took second on the throw. Another Hokie miscue sent Roby and Cravens home to put the Cards on top for the first time in the series.

Tech countered with Mackenzie Lawter's two-out solo home run in the bottom of the fourth tied the score at 4-4.

The Hokies pulled ahead again in the fifth inning behind Ally Repko's two-run double and an RBI groundout by Meredith Slaw in the sixth extended the lead to 7-4.

The Cardinals had runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh inning, but were unable to push another run across.

Keely Rochard (20-2) got the win after giving up four runs, one earned, on three hits and striking out seven in 6.0 innings of work. Emma Lemley picked up the save.

Taja Felder (1-3) took the loss, giving up three earned runs on three hits in 2.2 innings of relief. Greenwood, Otis and Cravens each had a hit for Louisville.
