Cards Drop Opening Game at Florida State
April 14, 2022 | Baseball
Louisville lost 8-1 in Thursday’s series opener in Tallahassee.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The third-ranked University of Louisville baseball team took an 8-1 loss in Thursday's series opener at No. 19 Florida State.
Louisville (24-9, 9-4 ACC) gave up five runs in the second and was unable to get its offense on track in the loss. The series continues on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
The Cardinals threatened early on Thursday night, getting singles from Jack Payton and Levi Usher to start the second inning. Back-to-back strikeouts left the runners on first and second, but Ben Bianco collected a third hit in the inning with a two-out single into left field. However, Payton was cut down at the plate to end the inning.
Florida State (20-13, 8-8) took over from there, plating five runs in the bottom of the second and never looking back. Louisville had just two baserunners over the next five innings, while the Seminoles added two on a home run in the seventh.
Ben Bianco led off the eighth with a double off the right-centerfield wall and later scored UofL's only run of the night from second on a wild pitch that the catcher couldn't find.
Bianco and Payton were the only Cardinals to register multiple hits, with both going 2-for-4 on the night.
