Morris Scores Six Goals in Louisville’s 13-12 Overtime Heartbreaker to Ohio State
March 31, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
Morris’ six goals marked a career-high, while her five second half goals are tied for the second most in Louisville program history.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville lacrosse rallied from a four-goal fourth quarter deficit to force overtime, but fell in a 13-12 heartbreaker to Ohio State at Cardinal Stadium on Thursday night.
"The team showed an extreme amount of fight and determination," said head coach Scott Teeter. "I thought our defense played unreal in the second half, making stop after stop. We just need to put it all together and play 60 minutes."
With the loss, Louisville moves to 5-7 on the year, while Ohio State improves to 8-4.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead just over six minutes in with two goals from Kylea Dobson, both assisted by Caroline Blalock, and a goal by Nicole Perroni.
But, Ohio State answered with four straight goals of their own and outscored Louisville 8-2 in the second quarter and the Cardinals trailed 9-5 at the half.
Hannah Morris scored twice to trim the Buckeyes lead to 10-8 with 5:00 remaining in the third quarter, but Ohio State responded with two more goals and took a 12-8 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the first five minutes of the fourth, Morris recorded back-to-back goals to pull Louisville within two and then Perroni got on the board to trim the lead to 12-11 with 2:52 remaining.
Louisville's strong defense helped them stay in the game despite Ohio State winning 14 consecutive draw controls.
But, trailing by one with less three minutes left, Perroni got the draw and eventually Morris delivered her sixth goal of the game to tie it at 12-12 with 2:03 to go.
Both teams had chances in the final minutes, but could not score and the game went into overtime.
The Cardinals had a woman-up opportunity late in the second overtime, but Blalock was called for a charge and turned the ball over.
A woman-down, it looked as if Ohio State was content to head to a third overtime but Nicole Ferrara found Lindsay Epstein with less than a second remaining for the game-winner.
Morris' six goals marked a career-high, while her five second half goals are tied for the second most in Louisville program history.
Dobson finished with three goals and an assist, while Perroni added two goals and five draw controls. Blalock filled the stat sheet with five caused turnovers, four ground balls and three assists.
J Pleck entered at goalkeeper midway through the second quarter and finished with five saves and a .500 save percentage.
Louisville remains home to host Vanderbilt at UofL Lacrosse Stadium on Tuesday at 12 p.m. ET.
