Morris Records Hat Trick in Loss at No. 2 North Carolina
March 13, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
Hannah Morris led the way with three goals for her team-leading sixth hat trick of the season.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville lacrosse pulled even after trailing 3-0 early in the first quarter, but could not overcome a second Tar Heels surge and fell 21-8 at No. 2 North Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Cardinals move to 5-4 on the year and 1-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while the Tar Heels improve to 8-0 overall, 2-0 in league play.
"The score doesn't necessarily show it, but I thought we competed and played hard," said head coach Scott Teeter. "Our offense executed at times and defensively I thought we played hard, but we tired a little bit. We battled back several times, but they have a star-studded lineup and we had a hard time overcoming their second quarter run."
Â
North Carolina got off to a 3-0 start early in the first quarter, but the Cardinals answered with three straight goals, two from Caroline Blalock and one from Nicole Perroni, to quickly even the score.
Â
The Tar Heels added two more goals at the end of the first quarter and then scored the first two goals of the second stanza to build their lead back to 7-3.
Â
Hannah Morris ended the North Carolina scoring run with a free position goal to pull within 7-4, but the Tar Heels outscored Louisville 7-2 to end the half and the Cardinals trailed 14-6 at the break.
Â
Morris and Kokoro Nakazawa added goals in the second half, but Louisville could not get any closer and fell 21-8.
Â
Morris led the way with three goals for her team-leading sixth hat trick of the season, while Blalock had her two goals on four shots. Perroni, Nakazawa and Allegra Catalano all finished with one goal for the Cardinals.
Â
Louisville finished with a season-low 11 turnovers, but North Carolina only committed 10 turnovers.
Â
The Cardinals won the draw control battle in the second half, 7-5, but lost the draw for the game for just the third time this season, 19-16.
Â
Next up, Louisville remains in the state of North Carolina to play at No. 8 Duke on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on the ACC Network.
