FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Louisville softball team built an early lead, but No. 10/8 Arkansas used a late-inning rally to win 8-5 in the series opener Sunday evening at Bogle Park.
Â
The teams will meet again in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. (ET) Monday.
Â
Louisville jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and led 5-2 through four innings, but the Razorbacks (8-3) scored six runs in the fifth and sixth innings en route to the win. The game featured a combined total of five home runs with graduate senior catcher Kendall Smith, freshman Korbe Otis and sophomore Vanessa Miller connecting on three for the Cardinals. Smith would finish the game with two hits and two RBIs to lead Louisville at the plate.
Â
The Cardinals (7-4) took an early lead behind a pair of home runs by freshman Korbe Otis and graduate senior Kendall Smith in the first inning. Carmyn Greenwood earned a one-out walk to set up Otis, who sent a full-count pitch over the left field wall for her first collegiate home run. After a walk to Roby, Smith followed with a shot over left field for her fourth homer of the season to increase the lead to 4-0.
Â
The Razorbacks countered with two runs in the home half of the first. Taylor Ellsworth walked and Danielle Gibson was hit by a pitch. Hannah Gammill followed with a single to plate Ellsworth and an error on the play sent Gibson home to cut the lead in half.
Â
The Cards got a run back in the top of the third when sophomore Vanessa Miller crushed a shot over centerfield in her first at-bat of the season to pull Louisville ahead 5-2.
Â
A two-run homer by Gibson in the sixth pulled Arkansas within a run.
Â
The Razorbacks tacked on four unearned runs in the sixth. After a Cardinal miscue allowed Ally Sockey to reach, Ellsworth's RBI single tied the game and a three-run shot by Gammill put Arkansas on top 8-5
Â
Sophomore Gabby Holloway (2-1) took the loss, allowing three unearned runs on two hits with one strikeout in 1.2 innings of relief.
Â
Jenna Bloom (2-0) picked up the win after surrendering one earned run on five hits and striking out eight in 6.0 innings of relief. Ellsword went 3-for-3 and Gammill finished the game with three hits and five RBI to pace Arkansas offensively.
