Cardinal Men take Second; Women are Third at ACC Championships

ATLANTA -- The No. 7/10 Cardinals won two silvers, a bronze and a gold on the final day of the 2022 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech.
The Louisville men placed second behind NC State and the women were third behind Virginia and NC State. With two first-place finishes and a third, Virginia Tech's Youssef Ramadan was named the ACC Championships Men's Most Valuable Swimmer by vote of the head coaches. Miami's Max Flory was chosen as the ACC Championships Men's Most Valuable Diver. After winning three individual events, Virginia's Alex Walsh earned the ACC Championships Women's Most Valuable Swimmer distinction after winning three individual events, while Duke's Margo O'Meara was named ACC Championships Women's Most Valuable Diver.
Women's 1650 Freestyle
To start the night out on the best foot possible, Liberty Williams won gold in the grueling 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:43.21 winning by almost 20 seconds, putting . Madison Luther put up a time of 16:24.26, shaving 11 seconds off her entry time to touch seventh overall. Paige McCormick went 16:45.48 to place 20th.Â
Men's 1650 Freestyle
Hayden Curley finished eighth in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:12.07 and Eli Shoyat was 10th with a time of 15:14.81. The event was won by NC State's John Gallant's 14:33.40.
Women's 200 Backstroke
In the 200 backstroke, freshman Rye Ulett touched fourth with a time of 1:52.58 and Paige Hetrick was sixth, posting a 1:52.84. Virginia freshman Reilly Tiltmann earned gold in the 200 backstroke with an NCAA A time of 1:50.49
Men's 200 Backstroke
In the men's 200 backstroke, Nick Albiero touched fourth with a time of 1:39.70. In the B-Final, Mitchell Whyte stopped the clock at 1:42.52. In the C-Final, Nikos Sofianidis turned in a 1:43.38 and Jack Wever went 1:44.31. The event was won by VT's Samuel Tornqvist, who put up A 1:39.20 for gold.
Women's 100 Freestyle
Gabi Albiero was the fastest Cardinal in the 100 freestyle, posting a 47.67 to touch fourth. Fellow Cardinal Arina Openysheva touched in 48.26 for sixth and Christiana Regenauer put up a 48.60 for eighth. Alena Kraus won the C-Final with a time of 49.11. Kate Douglass of Virginia swam a 46.81 for gold.
Men's 100 Freestyle
Murilo Sartori turned in a 42.18 which was good for fifth place in the 100 freestyle. Abdelrahman El-Araby won the B-final with a time of 42.42. Senior Colton Paulson was in that same final and touched sixth with a time of 43.02. Michael Eastman went 43.57 in the C-final. The gold went to VT's Youssef Ramadan's 41.76.
Women's 200 Breaststroke
Louisville had three swimmers in the B-Final of the 200 breaststroke. Mariia Astashkina was into the wall first with a time of 2:08.74, two seconds faster than her prelim. Morgan Friesen turned in a time of 2:10.56 for second and Diana Dunn went 2:13.39. Adeline Farrington won the C-final with a 2:12.63, cutting a second off her prelim time.Virginia's Alex Walsh finished in an ACC-record time of 2:03.02 to capture the women's 200 breaststroke championship. It was the second-fastest women's 200 breaststroke time in history.
Men's 200 Breaststroke
In the men's breaststroke, freshman Denis Petrashov won silver with a time of 1:51.89, cutting 1.49 off his prelim time. Louisville had two in the B-Final led by Evgenii Somov, the ACC meet record holder, who  touched 11th with a time of 1:53.65. Daniel Sos turned in a 1:56.08. Carles Marti of Virginia Tech won with a time of 1:51.69
Women's Platform
Else Praasterink won silver in women's platform diving with a score of 321.45, the first ACC medal for the women since 2016 in platform. Â Riley Bullock scored a 218.35 for 18th and Grace Leonard put up a 214.40 for 19th.
Women's 400 Free Relay
The foursome of Gabi Albiero (47.90), Christiana Regenauer (48.01), Tristen Ulett (47.89) and Arina Openysheva put up the third fastest 400 Medley Relay in school history with a 3:10.89 to win bronze. Virginia won the relay with a 3:08.22, to set a meet, pool and conference record.
Men's 400 Free Relay
 The Cardinal men's 400 freestyle relay finished fourth when Nicolas Albiero (42.39), Abdelrahman El-Araby (42.26), Murilo Sartori (41.73) and Colton Paulson (42.54) combined to post a 2:48.92, dropping 2.61 off their entry time. NC State won the relay with a 2:46.18.
