No. 4 Cardinals Down Duke 3-0

UofL records 14th sweep of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Aiko Jones had seven kills, an ace and two blocks to lead the No. 4 University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-12, 25-20, 25-22 win over Duke Friday night at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.

The Cardinals recorded their 14th sweep of the year and move to 20-2 on the season and 11-1 in ACC play. UofL hit .203 with six aces, and eight blocks. Â Claire Chaussee and Amaya Tillman each had six kills with Tillman adding three blocks. Setter Raquel Lazaro filled up the stat columns with five kills, 17 assists, an ace, a match-high seven digs and four blocks.

Duke moves to 12-10 and 3-8 in conference play. The Blue Devils were led by Rachel Richardson's 12 kills and 10 digs.

UofL is idle until Nov. 4 when they host NC State at 7 p.m. and UNC on Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. in L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.

Set 1
The Cardinals used a 7-0 run in the first set to take a 7-1 lead and force a Duke timeout. UofL spread the lead to eight when Raquel Lazaro launched one of three Cardinal aces at the Blue Devils to go up 15-7. Duke used its final timeout down ten at 19-9 after three straight miscues. A 9-0 run took the Cardinals to set point at 24-9 but Duke staved off the win three times before a Claire Chaussee kill put an end to the Duke rally. UofL hit .529 with three aces and two blocks to start the match. Duke hit -.083 with no blocks and two aces.

Two straight kills by Amaya Tillman gave the Cardinals a 10-3 lead early in the second set. Duke pulled within five at 15-10 at the media timeout but UofL had a 4-0 run coming out of the break to take a 19-11 lead and Duke called its first timeout. Â The Blue Devils countered with a 3-0 run under strong serving by Rachel Richardson to get to 20-15. Louisville scored on a service error and had to keep Duke at bay before rolling to the 25-20 win.

Duke took an early lead in the third set to go up 5-4 benefiting from a Louisville service error. The Cardinals gained some distance with a 5-1 run to lead 15-11 at the media break. Â Duke pulled to within one at 17-16 on a miss by Jones but the Cardinals kept the Blue Devils at arm's length going up 21-18 when Duke coach Jolene Nagel called timeout. An ace by Claire Chaussee pushed the Cards' lead to 23-19 and Nagel called her final timeout. A block by Raquel Lazaro and Cara Cresse gave Louisville the 25-22 win.
