Cardinals Open the Season at Tennessee
September 02, 2021 | Cross Country
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville cross country programs will open the season on Friday, Sept. 3, at a dual meet with Tennessee. The men will hit the starting line at Cherokee Farm first at 8:30 a.m. to compete over a 6K, followed by the women's 5K at 9:15 a.m.
In terms of early season tests, assistant coach Eric Heins is excited about the opportunity both teams have in Knoxville.
"We are excited to head down and compete with Tennessee," said Heins. "This will be a great chance to see where our players stand, how we prepared over the summer and how the training over the last couple weeks has paid off as we enter the season"
The Cardinals will travel 23 runners as both the men's and women's teams return all but one of their regular scorers from last season's shortened campaign, in addition to a group of highly anticipated newcomers.
The women's team returns seven runners overall, including redshirt senior Purity Sanga and senior Ivine Chemutai. Chemutai, a scoring runner in every meet over the last two seasons, made her collegiate debut on this course in 2018 where she finished fourth with a three-mile time of 17:45.56, while Sanga placed in top-10 in three of the four meets last fall. The women's team also welcomes in six freshman and Kassidy Dill, a graduate transfer from UNC Greensboro.
The men's team welcomes back seven runners from last year's roster, but the lineup will look quite different with the addition of six newcomers. Sophomore Shadrack Kipkosgei returns for the Cardinals after finishing in the top-10 in each of his meets last season.
