September 03, 2021 | Cross Country
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Ian Kibiwot claimed the men's individual title in his cross country debut as Louisville opened the 2021 season Friday morning at the Tennessee Dual, in Knoxville, Tenn.
"It was exciting to see Ian Kibiwot open his collegiate career with an individual title," said head coach Dale Cowper. "He has worked hard and it was great to see it pay off this morning."
The men were the first to hit course and put together a well-rounded effort throughout the four-mile race with Kibiwot leading the field at 20:00.25. Junior Shadrack Kipkosgei was the second Cardinal to finish, clocking in at 20:22.68 to place fourth. Graduate student Ben Ewert notched a mark of 20:49.57 to finish ninth before sophomore Isaac Kiprop rounded out the top-10 at 21:06.47.
In the women's three-mile race, redshirt senior Purity Sanga led throughout for the Cardinals, finishing fourth with a time of 17:34.01. Senior Ivine Chemutai followed in tenth place, clocking in at 18:50.69. Graduate transfer Kassidy Dill, 19:02.65, and freshman Mattie Kindelsperger, 19:16.91, crossed the line in 11th and 12th respectively.
A total of seven athletes made their collegiate debut, with an additional four runners competing for the first time as a Cardinal.
"This morning was a great opportunity to evaluate where each team is at coming off summer training," said Cowper. "It was great to see the team synergy grow over the trip, now we have a lot to look forward to this season as we enter a four-week training phase in preparation for the Live in Lou Classic in early October."
Louisville returns to action with the annual Live in Lou Cross Country Classic on Oct. 2 at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park.
