September 30, 2021 | Cross Country
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams return to action on Saturday, Oct. 2, for the 20th annual Live in Lou Cross Country Classic at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park.
"We are excited to race at home this weekend. We have had a very productive training block since our opening meet at Tennessee and each team is in position to show strong progress on Saturday," said head coach Dale Cowper. "The team's energy level is great and we look forward to watching them execute at a high level this weekend."
The men's 8000m gold race will kick off the meet at 9:45 a.m., while the women's 5000m gold race is scheduled to follow at 10:15 a.m.
Louisville is one of 35 teams competing on the men's side, led by No.14 Wisconsin, while the women will race against 42 other programs, including Mississippi State from the SEC in addition to Michigan and No.26 Wisconsin from the Big Ten.

For Louisville, this weekend's event will be the first of two events to be held at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park this fall. The NCAA recently announced that the course, which has served as a three-time site of the NCAA D1 Championships, will host the Southeast Regional Championship on Nov. 12.
"The Live in Lou Classic hosted by the Louisville Sports Commission always features extremely competitive fields on one of the best courses in the NCAA," added Cowper. "The recent schedule adjustment bringing the Southeast Regional Championships to town in November makes this weekend's race even more significant for our program. We have had some terrific moments at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park and look forward to building on those memories this fall."
The Cardinals are coming off a month of training following a dual meet with Tennessee to open the season on Sept. 3. Freshman Ian Kibiwot edged out the Volunteer's Karl Thiessen at 20:00.25 to take the men's individual title in his first collegiate race and paced a group of four Cardinals that finished inside the top-10 to earn ACC Freshman of the Week Honors on Sept. 7.
Redshirt senior Purity Sanga led the way for the women, finishing fourth overall with a time of 17:34.01. Sanga was followed by Senior Ivine Chemutai, who placed tenth at 18:50.69. A total of seven athletes made their collegiate debut, with an additional four runners competing for the first time as a Cardinal.
