Louisville opened up ACC play with a 3-0 shutout victory at home on Friday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team opened up ACC play in style on Friday, tallying a 3-0 victory over No. 25 Wake Forest at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville (3-2-0, 1-0-0 ACC) is the first team to score three goals against Wake Forest since Syracuse picked up a 3-1 win on Oct. 10, 2014. It's the largest shutout loss for the Demon Deacons since taking a 3-0 defeat against American on Nov. 25, 2001.
The Cardinals started quickly on Friday night, registering a shot and a pair of corner kicks in the first six minutes.
The breakthrough came in the 18th minute courtesy of Pedro Fonseca and Aboubacar Camara. Fonseca worked his way through traffic and played a ball between defenders into Camara. The forward then one-timed home a blast for his third goal of the season and eighth in his last 11 matches.
Louisville stayed on the attack and found the net again 10 minutes later. Fonseca got the play started once again, tackling away possession and drawing a free kick from roughly 30 yards out. Sander Roed took the free kick, lobbing a ball into the center of the box that was headed home by Josh Jones. It was the first collegiate goal for the freshman from Hatfield, Pa.
It was a dominant first half for the Cards, who outshot Wake Forest (2-2-0, 0-1-0) 10-1 over the first 45 minutes with a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Demon Deacons regrouped at the break and put the pressure on early in the second half. Wake Forest put six shots toward the goal in the first eight minutes of the half but Detre Bell stood tall.
Fonseca was at it again in the 55th minute, creating another offensive chance and drawing a penalty kick. The senior made it a 3-0 contest with a goal from the spot, his second tally of the season.
The Cardinals handled business the rest of the way, seeing out the final 35 minutes of action to complete the victory.
Bell and the Louisville defense kept the Demon Deacons off the board, with the senior making a pair of saves for his second shutout of the season.
The Cardinals head out on the road next week for a road ACC match at Syracuse. Kickoff next Friday is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
