Cardinals have daunting slate of competition
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team has released its 2021-22 schedule.
Â
UofL opens the fall season slate at West Lafayette for the Purdue Invitational (Sept. 24-26), followed by the All-American (Oct. 4-10) and the WVU Invite (Oct. 15-17). The Cardinals host the Louisville Classic (Oct. 29-31) at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center before concluding the fall season in Champaign for the Illinois Invite (Nov. 5-7).
Â
"The schedule is out of my hands to a certain extent because the ACC controls the league matchups. With that said, our schedule is ridiculously tough, said head coach Mark Beckham. "In my opinion. we have as many as four National championship quality teams on our schedule and then we add the other seven or eight top 30 level teams on top of that, we have our hands full for sure. Then in our non-conference slate, I added Vanderbilt, a former National champion and an SEC power. I probably should seek counseling for that one. But, I think our team has a chance to be good so I have to challenge them and give them as many opportunities as a team and individually as possible. A lot of exciting matches so it should be fun for sure."
Â
Â
The Cardinals begin the spring season with a four-match home stand beginning with a double-header against Cincinnati and Marshall on Jan. 21. The team will wrap up the home stand against Miami (Ohio) on Jan. 23 and Ball State on Feb. 4.
Â
UofL goes on the road for a non-conference match with Vanderbilt on Feb. 6.
Â
Louisville returns home for the remainder of February starting with three matches at home against Saint Louis and Butler on Feb. 12, and Austin Peay on Feb. 19.
Â
The Cardinals face a daunting ACC slate featuring six opponents that finished the previous season ranked in the top 10 in Oracle ITA Division I Women Team Rankings. The opponents include North Carolina (No. 2), NC State (No. 6), Florida State (No. 7), Duke (No. 8), Virginia (No. 9), and Georgia Tech (No. 10).
Â
The Cards begin ACC competition by hosting Duke on Feb. 25 and North Carolina on Feb. 27 and Notre Dame on March 6.
Â
Louisville hits the road for a two-match road trip against Georgia Tech, the team that advanced to the ACC Championship match last season, on March 11 and Clemson on March 13.
Â
The Cards close out March with a 3-match home stand against non-conference opponent Xavier on March 18, Virginia on March 25, led by Emma Navarro who won the 2021 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship as a freshman, and Virginia Tech on March 27.
Â
UofL travels to Syracuse on April 1 and Boston College on April 3 for a quick two-match road trip.
Â
The Cards return home to host Florida State, which advanced to the Elite Eight of the 2021 NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last three years on April 8. The team will close out regular season conference play by hosting Miami on April 10 before visiting NC State on April 15 and Wake Forest on April 17.
Â
The ACC Tournament will take place in Rome, Georgia at the Rome Tennis Center on April 20-24.
Â
Last season, the Cardinals finished with an overall record of 9-13, with six of those wins coming at home.
