The Cardinals held their first official training of the fall on Tuesday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer program officially opened up the fall on Tuesday as it took the field for the first training of the season.
John Michael Hayden begins his third season at the helm of the Louisville program looking to build off a strong spring season that saw the Cardinals post a 4-2-0 mark and finish second in the ACC Atlantic Division. UofL capped off the spring with a 2-1 upset of top-ranked Clemson in April at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
"We're thrilled to finally get going again," Hayden said at Tuesday's Media Day press conference. "If you look at last year, we had an up and down fall and spring. We didn't have a great fall, but we had an unbelievable spring. Now we add new guys to the mix with another highly ranked recruiting class and it's just going to add to the strength of our squad."
The Cardinals return 15 student-athletes from the spring roster led by All-ACC forward Pedro Fonseca (four goals, team-high four assists) and All-ACC Freshman Team selection Aboubacar Camara (team-high six goals, one assist). Redshirt-senior goalkeeper Detre Bell is back as well after joining Louisville for the spring and starting all six matches in goal.
Hayden and his coaching staff welcome in 12 newcomers for the 2021 season, two of which were on campus for the spring semester. Louisville's 2021 recruiting class ranked No. 9 nationally, giving the Cardinals back-to-back years of nationally-ranked classes.
Louisville takes the field for the first time on Saturday with an exhibition match at UAB. Following a second exhibition at Indiana on Aug. 21, the Cardinals will open up the regular season at Saint Louis on Aug. 26 before playing at home for the first time against Evansville on Aug. 30.
