Hartlage One Shot Off the Lead at the NCAA Regional; Cards Sit in Fourth Place

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – It didn't feel much like May as the University of Louisville women's golf team hosted its first regional Monday during the first round of the Louisville Regional in Simpsonville, Ky.
Sunshine, but also chilling winds and low temperatures greeted the players for the first day of regional action at the par 72, 6-289-yard course, and the scores reflected it as 17 of the 18 schools shot over par.
The Cardinals finished the first round of play in fourth place after carding a 5-over-par 293 to sit seven shots behind Florida State, the current leader at 2-under-par. The Seminoles shot 286 to hold a
five-shot leader over UCLA and a six-shot advantage over Michigan State.
"I'm pleased with how we played today," head coach Whitney Young said. "We got off to a good start and just battled. The wind was a little difficult out there, but we did the things we needed to do to put us in this position."
The cold weather didn't seem to bother first team all-ACC performer Lauren Hartlage, who paced the Cardinals during the first round. The senior carded a 3-under-par 69 to stand in a tie for third place just one shot behind Amelia Williamson of Florida State and Emilie Paltrinieri – the leaders after day one.
The fifth-year performer was steady right out of the gate recording pars on eight of the first nine holes and notching her first birdie on the sixth hole to post a 1-under on the front.
Hartlage would move into the overall lead on No. 1 when she knocked her approach shot within a couple feet for her second birdie and would then birdie the second hole as well. After a bogey on No. 3, the native of Elizabethtown, Ky., would birdie No. 6 to move to her final score at 3-under. She had an opportunity on No. 9 for another score but missed a short birdie putt.
"I thought I hit the ball very well today," Hartlage said. "However, I missed some short putts. I'm happy with the way I played today, but know tomorrow is another day and I have to be ready to go tomorrow morning."
Hana Ryskova was solid in finishing with a 1-over-par 73 to end the day in a tie for 17th place. After notching a bogey on the first hole, the sophomore would birdie No. 14 and No. 17 to finish even during her first nine holes.
After suffering a double bogey on No. 3, she rebounded with a pair of birdies.
Freshman Molly Lyne, who was playing in her second career event, birdied three of the first six holes, but would give it back on the next three holes to end the back nine at even par. The rookie would go on to tie her career-best round with a 74 to close in a tie for 25th.
Margot Bechadergue and Agustina Gomez-Cisterna were tied for 54th and 91st, respectively after shooting 77 and 81.
The Cardinals, who will be paired with No. 1 South Carolina and No. 9 Auburn, will begin Tuesday's round at 9 a.m. off hole No. 1.
