LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head coach Whitney Young knew the NCAA Louisville Regional would tighten up during the second day at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Ky. -- and that's exactly what happened.
Entering the day in fourth place, the Cardinals remained in the same position, improving by four shots from the previous day and hold a four-shot lead to advance to the NCAA Golf Championships on May 21-23 in Scottsdale, Ariz. There are 11 teams within 12 shots of the lead heading into the final round
On Tuesday, the Cards shot a 1-over-par 288, which was tied for the third-best round in school history during post-season play. The Cards sit at 6-over-par heading into the decisive final round, which begins for UofL at 9 a.m. off the first tee box.
Not only are the Cardinals in position to advance to the national championships, but UofL is just five shots off the tournament lead heading into Wednesday's third round. Florida State holds the lead at 1-over-par followed by South Carolina and Arkansas at 5-over. Michigan State currently holds the final advancing spot at 9-over-par.
"Today we got off to a little bit of a rough start. However, we stayed patient and ended up finishing well, which will give us confidence going into tomorrow. Overall we have put ourselves in a good position, but we must continue to capitalize on our good shots and eliminate mental mistakes," head coach Whitney Young said. "If we can stay confident and patient, not only will we have a chance to qualify for Nationals, but win the Louisville Regional."
After senior Lauren Hartlage posted one of the top rounds on Monday, it was sophomore Hana Ryskova's day on Tuesday.Â
The second-year player was even after three holes and went on to birdie two of the next six holes to shoot 2-under-par on the front nine. The back nine was a different story as the native of the Czech Republic was even after recording pars on the final six holes. She enters the final day in tie for 10th place with a 1-under-par 143.
Hartlage entered the day one shot of the lead, but the senior slipped into a tie for sixth place after shooting an even-par 72. She sits just three shots behind North Florida's Christin Eisenbeiss, who shot a 67 on Tuesday.
The native of Elizabethtown, Ky., entered the final two holes at 2-over-par, but the fifth-year senior gave the Cards a shot in the arm with a pair of birdies to close the day and remain in the top 10.
Molly Lyne, who shot 74 in only her fourth career round on Monday, was even better the second day, shooting a 1-over-par 73.
After opening the first nine holes at 4-over-par, the freshman from Cary Grove, Ill., responded with a 3-under-par on the back nine to close the day in a tie for 28th.
After opening play with a 5-over 77, Margot Bechadergue improved by three shots to shoot a 74 on Tuesday and move into a tie for 50th place.
Playing in only her third career event, Carly Haines, who was substituted into the lineup on Tuesday, shot a 77, but showed improvement over the final nine holes. The freshman from Rye Brook, N.Y., opened by shooting five-over-par on the front, but responded by carding an even par on the back to end the day in a tie for 95th place.
The Cardinals will be paired with Texas and Michigan State for final round.
