Cardinals Hold on to Beat Georgia Tech 6-5

ATLANTA – The University of Louisville softball team withstood a late-inning Georgia Tech to beat the host Yellow Jackets 6-5 in game one of an ACC series Friday afternoon at Mewborn Field. With rain in Saturday's forecast, the teams will play a second game at 3 p.m. Friday.

Carmyn Greenwood went 2-for-3 with a two-run double while Charley Butler went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and Sydney Bickel went 2-for-4 with a run to lead the Cardinals at plate.

Louisville (14-15, 8-10 ACC) jumped to a 1-0 lead int the top of the first. Carmyn Greenwood led off with a hit and Celene Funke followed with a single to right field. Greenwood was out attempting to take third, but Funke moved into scoring position for Taylor Roby's RBI single.

The Cardinals tallied five runs in the fourth. Roby got the frame started when she earned a walk and was lifted for pinch runner Jordyn Wolfe who proceeded to steal second, took third on a wild pitch and was safe at the plate on Taryn Weddle's fielder's choice. Butler followed with her second home run of the season, a towering two-run shot over the left field fence, to make the score 4-0. Â Back-to-back singles from Maddy Newman and Bickel put two runners on for Greenwood's double pushing the lead to 6-0. Â

The Yellow Jackets (10-19, 4-15 ACC) got on the scoreboard with five runs in the bottom of the seventh. An error, a walk and a hit loaded the bases with two outs. Breanna Roper was hit by a pitch to plate Georgia Tech's first run of the game and left the bases loaded for Cameron Standford's grand slam which pulled the Jackets within a run. Freshman Gabby Holloway entered to pitch for the Cardinals and retired the next batter to earn her first career save.

Roby (8-8) picked up the win, allowing five unearned runs on five hits and striking out four in 6.2 innings.

Madison McPherson (2-6) took the loss, giving up six earned runs on six hits and striking out one in 3.2 innings. Stanford paced Georgia Tech at the plate, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
