No. 15 Louisville Comes Up Short against No. 8 Duke, 12-10
April 08, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
The Cardinals’ strong defense caused 14 turnovers in the Top 15 matchup.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – No. 15 University of Louisville women's lacrosse turned in a strong defensive effort, causing 14 turnovers, but came up short 12-10 in a top-15 matchup against No. 8 Duke on Thursday night at Cardinal Stadium.
Â
With the loss, the Cardinals move to 5-7 and 1-6 in the ACC, while the Blue Devils improve to 7-5 and 3-5 in the league.
"It was a good lacrosse game, it was a game of runs as both teams battled back to take leads," said head coach Scott Teeter. "We had opportunities down the stretch, but unfortunately their goalie made some key saves and she won them the game."
Â
Duke jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first four minutes, but Louisville stormed back with five straight goals to take a 5-2 lead with 17:26 remaining in the first half. Duke rallied with five straight goals of their own to go back up 7-5 before Allegra Catalano scored with 0:29 left in the half to cut the Duke lead to 7-6 at the break.
Â
The Blue Devils scored two straight goals in the first three minutes of the second half to extend their lead to 9-6. Caroline Blalock ended the Cardinals' drought on a free position goal with 19:39 left in the game to close the gap 9-7.
Â
Three goals from Ally Hall and Nicole Perroni then gave UofL a 10-9 lead with 13:23 left in the game.
Â
But, Duke responded by scoring three straight goals to take a 12-10 lead at the 8:15 mark.
Â
Louisville's offense registered four more shots on goal in the final minutes, but could not find the back of the net before the final horn.
Â
Ally Hall led the way offensively for the Cardinals, tallying four points on three goals and one assist. Caroline Blalock and Nicole Perroni added two goals each.
Â
Alex McNicholas had a team-high four caused turnovers and team-high three draw controls, while adding three ground balls.
Â
Rachel Florek finished the game with nine saves and a .429 save percentage. Duke goalkeeper Sophia LeRose had 14 saves, 13 of which came in the second half.
Â
The Cardinals' aggressive defense led to 14 caused turnovers, while Duke had just four, but draw controls weighed heavily in the Blue Devils' favor, 19-5.
Â
Louisville continues its three-game homestand as Syracuse comes to UofL Lacrosse Stadium for the first of two meetings on Friday, April 16 at 3 p.m. ET.
