No. 17 Louisville’s Comeback Comes Up Short at Notre Dame
April 24, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
Nicole Perroni recorded her first career hat trick in the loss.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - No. 17 University of Louisville women's lacrosse trimmed an eight-goal deficit to three late, but ultimately fell 15-11 in the regular season finale at Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals move to 5-10 overall and 1-9 in conference play, while the Fighting Irish improve to 8-5 on the year and 5-5 in the league.
"I thought we came out a little slow out of the gate and got behind, but we had some spurts in the second half where we took it right to them," said head coach Scott Teeter. "I challenged our players to step up on offense at halftime and we had a good response, which was nice to see."
Notre Dame opened a 2-0 lead early, but goals by Hannah Morris and Kylea Dobson pulled the Cardinals to within 2-1 and 3-2. The Fighting Irish then closed the half by scoring four of the next five goals and Louisville went into the break trailing 7-3.
Caroline Blalock opened the second stanza with back-to-back goals in the first three minutes to trim the Notre Dame lead to 7-5.
However, Louisville then went on a scoring drought that lasted 11-plus minutes and the Fighting Irish scored six straight goals to build a 13-5 lead.
The Cardinals answered by going on a 6-1 run and trimmed the lead to 14-11 with 2:49 remaining on a free position goal by Morris.
Louisville regained possession with 1:35 to go and called timeout, but Nicole Perroni's shot was wide and Notre Dame scored on the other end to push the lead back to 15-11 with 0:36 remaining.
Caroline Blalock and Perroni both finished with hat tricks for the Cardinals. It marked Perroni's first hat trick of her career and she also finished with three caused turnovers and two draw controls. Blalock added four ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover.
Morris added two goals on seven shots for Louisville, while Dobson and Ally Hall both added a goal and an assist. Hall's goal extended her goal scoring streak to 14 games. Alex McNicholas had an assist, four caused turnovers, three draw controls and two ground balls.
Rachel Florek played all 60 minutes in net, finishing with seven saves and a .318 save percentage.
The Cardinals outshot the Fighting Irish 33-28 and both teams finished with 22 shots on goal, but Notre Dame goalkeeper Bridget Deehan had 11 saves.
Louisville finished 4-8 on free position shots, while Notre Dame was 6-8, but the Fighting Irish went 5-5 in the first half to help build their lead.
The Cardinals now turn their attention to the ACC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
