Michael Kirian improved to 5-0 on the season.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The fifth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team got back in the win column on Friday night at Jim Patterson Stadium, claiming a 5-3 victory over Wake Forest in the series opener.
Michael Kirian improved to 5-0 on the season with his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season. The southpaw struck out 11 over six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Henry Davis went 2-for-3 at the plate, including his sixth home run of the season. Trey Leonard was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, reaching base four more times. Leonard is 7-for-9 in the last two games with five RBIs.
Wake Forest (9-10, 4-8 ACC) strung together three singles to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Louisville (17-7, 9-3) answered back though in the second inning. Alex Binelas led the inning off with a single back through the middle and Lucas Dunn followed with a walk. On the walk, ball four got away from the catcher and allowed both runners to advance an extra base.
Leonard then delivered a base hit through the right side, driving home both runners to put the Cardinals in front.
Kirian kept rolling on the mound while the Louisville offense kept adding on. Cameron Masterman singled into centerfield to bring two more across the plate in the fourth and Davis' home run in the fifth stretched the lead to four.
The Demon Deacons cut the lead in half with a two-run home run in the sixth, but the Louisville bullpen slammed the door shut over the final three innings.
Tate Kuehner struck out four in two perfect innings and Adam Elliott added two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save of the season.
Louisville and Wake Forest continue the weekend series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
